Behind the Singer

Ana Rangel Ortiz, soprano, is a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate in Vocal Performance at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she serves as Adjunct Instructor in Applied Voice and Music Appreciation. She holds a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Redlands and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from California State University, Los Angeles.
At UNLV, Ana teaches undergraduate voice students—both music majors and non-majors—guiding them in healthy vocal technique, diction, repertoire selection, and performance preparation. She also teaches Music Appreciation in both online and in-person formats, designing structured and accessible courses that incorporate diverse musical traditions and culturally responsive content. Her teaching emphasizes clarity, practical skill-building, and helping students connect music to broader historical and cultural contexts.
As a performer, Ana has appeared in roles including Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus, First Witch in Dido and Aeneas, Alcibiades and Phaedrus in Erik Satie’s Socrate, Page in Salome, and Alice in Le Comte Ory. She made her operatic debut in Philip Glass’s Hydrogen Jukebox and has also performed in contemporary and original works. Her musical theater credits include Cosette in Les Misérables and Cinderella in Into the Woods.
Her doctoral research centers on the vocal works of 19th-century Mexican soprano-composer Angela Peralta, reflecting her commitment to expanding access to Latin American repertoire for modern singers and audiences.
In addition to her university teaching and performance work, Ana has maintained an active presence in community arts education. She founded Desert Songbird Vocal Studio and previously served on the Board of Directors of the California Desert Chorale (2019–2024), where she continues to volunteer. She has been a member and featured soloist with the organization since 2014 and has worked extensively with young singers and community performers in Southern California and Nevada.
